Major Labor Unions Join Calls Urging President Biden to Continue to Grant Executive Clemency and Commute Excessive Sentences
WASHINGTON, D.C. – FWD.us Executive Director Zoë Towns issued the following statement today after several of the nation’s largest labor unions, including Service Employees International Union (SEIU), American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), AFT, American Postal Workers Union (APWU), National Education Association (NEA), and United Mine Workers of America sent a letter urging President Biden to take additional bold action and continue to grant clemency and commutations for people serving disproportionately long and racially disparate sentences in federal prison:
“It’s critical that whatever moves in the final weeks of this administration includes broad clemency for those serving disproportionately long and racially disparate prison sentences,” said Zoë Towns, Executive Director of FWD.us. “We applaud national labor leaders for adding their voices to the push for President Biden to grant clemency for the thousands serving long sentences under outdated laws. Their support is an important step in advancing this effort, as labor unions have long been at the forefront of advocating for safe and effective criminal justice reforms that support the well-being of workers and their families.”
