WASHINGTON, D.C. – FWD.us President Todd Schulte and Executive Director Zoë Towns issued the following statement on the 2024 election results and former President Trump’s election:
"As a bipartisan organization with a mission to advance commonsense and long-overdue reforms to our failed immigration and criminal justice systems, we know that tens of millions of people woke up this morning afraid for themselves and for their loved ones. These are the people that we have fought with and for to win protections and create opportunities across red and blue states through several administrations. Today, we are clear-eyed and determined in our work ahead as we enter a second Trump presidency and beyond.
"There’s much more to say and even more that needs to be done – and done quickly. The first order of business must be protecting each other. The second is to return to the larger and longer-term work of rebuilding trust with the American people on the issues that, left untended to, are most vulnerable to the weaponization that divides and lessens us.
"When you look beyond the binaries served up to American voters this election cycle – a felon or democracy, toughness or chaos, a ban or a welcome – you see them as false choices that overshadow real, necessary and in many cases broadly supported policy solutions. The pressures of irregular migration and the recycling harms of crime and incarceration will not go away on their own, nor can they be blotted out by sheer bravado. They must be reckoned with in ways that create lasting change."
