FWD.us on New York Senate Crime Victims, Crime & Correction Committee Passing the Earned Time Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. – FWD.us Executive Director Zoë Towns issued the following statement today after the New York Senate Crime Victims, Crime & Correction Committee passed the Earned Time Act (ETA). The legislation, which FWD.us has advocated for over multiple years, moves one step closer to becoming law:

“The Earned Time Act is a necessary part of a constructive response to the current crisis in New York’s broken prison system. By reducing recidivism, improving safety in prisons, and saving taxpayers millions, this much-needed and overdue legislation will go a long way in advancing safety, dignity, and hope for incarcerated people and correctional staff alike.”

“We thank Senate leaders, notably Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Committee Chair Julia Salazar, and bill sponsors Senator Jeremy Cooney and Assemblymember Anna Kelles, for advancing these bills at this critical moment and bringing it one step closer to passage.”

“FWD.us is proud to have supported the Earned Time Act for years. Today, we stand alongside the broad and growing coalition – including law enforcement and corrections professionals, labor, civil rights groups, and over 200 organizations – calling for its passage.”

“After many years of safe reduction, New York’s prison population is on the rise, adding more fuel to an extremely dangerous corrections crisis. We urge New York lawmakers to pass evidence-based solutions like the Earned Time Act, Second Look Act, and the Marvin Mayfield Act now.”
